I know it sounds crazy, but the innate ability to connect with people and make them feel comfortable often has a massive price tag. There are dozens of jobs that really reward this skill set and since people skills can’t really be taught in a classroom setting, the employers for these jobs couldn’t care less about your lack of education. At a certain point during your career however, some companies require a degree in order to continue to move up the corporate ladder. If that situation does occur you can always cross that bridge when you get to it.

Top Jobs that Require People Skills but No High School Diploma or College Degree

  1. Human Resources. Often times you’ll need a degree to land a human resources job in a big company. However if your manager notices that you do a good job of dealing with employee’s in the office and your generally well liked, this can often result in a transition into an HR role. This job pays fairly well and involves resolving disputes, doing office demonstrations about work policy’s, and setting policy’s.
  2. Private Detective. This job requires a certain level of people skills but in a very different way than these other jobs. It requires “street smarts”, i.e the ability to read peoples thoughts feelings and emotions. If you have served jail time in your past, have worked in law enforcement or the military, or you just feel you possess this skill, becoming a private detective can be a very well paying solution.
  3. Waiter at a High Priced Restaurant. This is generally the first job people think of when seeking jobs that don’t require people skills or education. Waiters at expensive restaurants can make a pretty considerable sum, sometimes as high as $50 per hour. It requires the ability to deal with unhappy customers, good memory, multi tasking, and of course people skills.
  4. Casino Dealer. If you have anything on your criminal record, this is probably not the job for you. Dealers are thoroughly screened to ensure they can be trusted as a typical dealer will handle several thousnads of dollars of chips in a single day, sometimes tends of thousands. Strong people skills can help you land huge tips at the tables making this a very lucrative opportunity.
  5. Real Estate Agent. This is the most lucrative job you can get that largely depends on your people skills. You can easily run an entire real estate business solely based on referrals without doing any type of marketing. Strong people skills can help you build further business through word of mouth and lock in sales on your current clients.

There are dozens of high paying jobs that rely solely on your people skills while there are thousands more that require a combination of people skills and education. If the job you’ve got your eye on requires both, you might just want to just bite the bullet and pursue your degree. Regardless of what you choose to do, if your unemployed or going to school, it’s really helpful to have a stream of income coming in on the side. The job search process is not an easy one and should be considered a full-time job – however, it is worth your time, as it will pay you back ten-fold over the years.

  1. Resumes, References & Cover Letter

Almost all job searches require candidates to begin with, at minimum, at resume and in most cases a cover letter and references.

Although it is unlikely that a resume alone will get you a job; a good resume can help you get to the interview stage. A resume should tell potential employers enough to make them eager to meet you; however, keep in mind that in many cases, employers will have many resumes to review so it is important to keep resumes succinct.

The links contained on the O.A.C.C. website (click here ) contains a plethora of tips, tricks and examples of effective resumes, cover letters and reference forms. Choose one that best suits your own personal style and take into consideration some of the following tips:

  • Personal content: Stay away from mentioning anything personal that is not related to the job including your date of birth, health status and Social Insurance Number.
  • Paper Choice: The safe choice for paper colour is always white or off-white. Avoid bright and unusual colours and, if possible, try to use high quality bond paper. When printing, laser printers still produce best results and always select a type style and size that are easy to read.
  • Photos: The use of photographs is not recommended unless specifically requested.
  • The Final Check: Have at least one family or friend member proof read your resume to ensure 100% accuracy and correctness.

This is the most common resource used by people looking for jobs. The benefit of searching for a job that has been advertised is that there are MANY places students can go to search. The hidden job market

According to some job search experts, up to 80% of all jobs are available through what is known as the hidden job market. The hidden job markets are jobs that are not advertised. Rather, they are jobs that are circulated through managers’ network of co-workers, business associates, friends and acquaintances. Accessing this market should be a key element of any job search.

  1. Decide what job you want. Focus on what industry, size of company, number of employees, management style, etc. that you want in your next job. Reflect upon your career history to a time and place where you were the most satisfied with your work and use it to build a profile of your next job. Visualize it; think about how it will feel once you’re there in your new office. Write down where it is, who you’re working for, what kind of a work environment it is, and see yourself physically there. Revisit your profile often as you continue through your job search to maintain your focus and realize your goals for your next job.
  2. Build multiple resumes that support your job seeking goals. Your resume format should look different based upon your current situation or the kind of job you’re seeking. Consider what kind of job you’re seeking then pick the type of resume that will highlight your best qualities. Research different resume formats such as skills based or chronological resumes. Create several resumes with each one tailored to a specific job you’re seeking. Don’t send out one generic resume to every employer.
  3. Always write and submit a cover letter with your resume. The cover letter is a highly effective tool that you can use to stand above the competition. Omit your political affiliation, religious beliefs, hobbies, personal family information, clubs you belong to, or any information that does not relate to the job or your professional capabilities. If you’re online in social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter, clean up your profile. Recruiters are going there to check you out before they extend a job offer. Don’t let your online presence cost you your professional livelihood.
  6. Use “keywords” to enhance your resume’s screening chances with automated recruiting systems. Consider the job’s advertisement from a search engine perspective by identifying and utilizing “keywords” above the fold in your resume. You’ll want to include as many keywords or phrases copied directly from the ad, built into meaningful copy in your resume to increase your chances of being selected for an interview.
  7. Learn best practices for conducting your job search, writing effective cover letters and resumes or hire a professional to help you. There are lots of books on these subjects. A couple of my favorites: “What Color Is Your Parachute: 2009,” by Richard Nelson Bolles and “Knock ’em Dead 2009: The Ultimate Job Search Guide” by Martin Yate.
  8. Tell the truth. The majority of people lie somewhere within their resume’s content, either about degrees earned, education received, dates worked or salary earned, or self-employment facts. With a glut of people in the job market, employers are ramping up their screening process to include running background checks on prospective employees. Don’t lie. It could cost you your next job.
  9. And finally, believe in yourself. If you don’t, no one else will. It’s tough to continually be rejected, most of the time not hearing any response from companies where you’ve applied. Find ways to keep your morale up in order to be a real contender. Have confidence that you will land in a good place; it simply will take longer now than it did before for you to find your next venture.

First and foremost is the amount of education one would need to invest in before they could actually begin to work. Although many funding sources are available it’s important to remember that it will eventually need to be paid off. For careers in the medical field this is often not an issue since the expected salaries will more than compensate the cost to be paid back. However, for someone entering a labor related field, the salary may not be sufficient to meet the monthly obligations of the loan.

A second consideration is interest. If a person can’t seeing themselves doing the work on a daily basis late into life, it is probably not a good choice. This is often determined when people are very young. During play as children people often gravitate toward various ways to amuse themselves. By looking back on childhood activities it is easier to determine the career field that will be a perfect match in adulthood.

One should also consider preferred lifestyle. If living in a cottage along a lake with few demands and lots of time for leisure activities, a job that reflects a slower pace and few demands will more than likely supply the monetary needs that can maintain that way of life. However, if living in a big house or condo in the “center of the action” and driving fast cars is the vision one has for their future, a position that is high level, fast-paced, and allows promotions on a regular basis will be preferred, but more education will probably be required.

Today one of the most important considerations are job availability. There are certain careers that will always need people. The medical field and technology are two such areas that seem to always have positions available. Part of this is due to the rate of growth and turn-over in the field, which should also be taken into consideration. 5 Important Time Managment Tips for Students

Time is what we want most, but what we spend worst.”

Mr. Penn hit the nail on the head with this quotation. As humans we beg, plead, bargain and negotiate for more time. However, if asked how we would spend it, our answers tend to come up short. As in life, time management in your education is paramount to your success as a student. Those students that master it, perform very well in their classes.

Mastering your time management will be a necessity during your schooling (and with any schooling after that!). Students that manage to develop skill sets to better control their time will find greater success and less stress. However, just like any other skill, time management is learned.

So here are a few Time Management tips for your education. If you are not using them now, put them into practice and see how much more efficient you become!

Prioritize your tasks
Look at your day ahead and take a few minutes to figure out what NEEDS to be done THAT DAY! These should be things that directly relate to your current goal(s). If something does not correspond to your immediate goals, it has less importance. Something that is necessary to complete your goal that day has severe importance and demands your attention that day!

Make a list
Knowing what you have to complete in your day keeps you focused and task oriented. Take 10 minutes before you go to bed and make a list (using the priorities from tip #1) of the tasks to be completed that day. Carry this list with you and refer to it often. When you complete a task, cross it off (it feels good!). At the end of the day you should have your list completely crossed off. If not, the tasks you did not get to will go at the top of tomorrow’s list.

Concentrate on ONE task at a time
Attack your list one thing at a time. This one can be hard for many as we all have distractions in our lives. Try to avoid them at all costs. Close Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, turn off the TV and shut the door! By being laser-focused on completing that one task before anything else you will help keep yourself from feeling overwhelmed. Once that one is done move on to the next on the list.

Dedicate time throughout the day
This is CRUCIAL! Plan your day in accordance with what needs to be done (I.e.: if you have an exam the next day you need to allow time for study). Everyday should be planned out before it starts. Take time for school studies, job, family and also time to relax (don’t forget this one!). Benjamin Franklin once said, “If we fail to plan, then we plan to fail”. If you do not plan your day, others will plan it for you. When that happens, you become less effective and you become one of those people that say “I just don’t have enough time”

Build “time rewards” into your schedule
In order to make a habit of time management- you need to reward yourself for all your hard work. Put time allotments in your schedule that give you time to do something you want to do, not something you have to do. Take time to exercise, read a book and just generally relax.

Going to school can be tasking. If you master your time, you make your education that much easier and more fulfilling. Implement a few of these tips into your routine (for our current students, do it immediately!). I guarantee you will feel less overwhelmed and in more control of your education, job and life.

But some mistakes, you should learn from others and not make them as they are not worth losing what you could have got, if you never made them.

Resume is one such thing in which you MUST learn from the mistakes made by others because you might never get a chance to bring back what you lost. You might think that a prospective employer might just think as simple as “Oh! That’s a mistake” but in reality, the impression such mistakes leave are irreversible and fatal for your career.

Although mistakes may be many and various depending upon individual profile but listed below are some of the most common mistakes along with the implication/s they leave on the readers’ minds:

Employer thinks: Has he made any significant contribution/s?

Advice: Employer understands what you could have done in a role. He wants to know what you achieved.

Job responsibilities: Reduced the cost of procurement by 15% in the financial year ending 2012.

Created a strong portfolio of vendors with best quality and rates with excellent capacity to supply in large quantities at short notices.

Reorganized procurement data in a form which is more accessible and easily comprehensible by management and the team.

  1. Listing of Experience/ Education in Chronological order

Classic Example:

Work Experience: XYZ company – 2008-2009 – as Marketing executive

ABC Company – 2009 – 2011 – as Assistant Manager marketing

Current Company – 2011 – till date – as Manager marketing

Employer thinks: “Oh my God, I will have to read all before reaching what I really wish to read.”

Or he may simply not read below because of lack of time and may completely over look it. He will think you are currently unemployed.

Advice: Always mention education/ experience etc. in “REVERSE CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER”. Saves time and pain for the employer. He may read the rest, if time permits.

  1. Long Paragraphs

Classic Example:

Computer Skills: I have excellent command over MS word, especially, excel and I have also worked in a SAP environment. I also, have experience with Coral Draw and I am proficient in creating advanced designs.

Employer: Usually overlooks such information because of lack of time. Also, the expertise and proficiency never stands out.

Advice: Use ‘Bullet Points’

Computer Skills: Proficient in MS word

Experience of working in SAP environment

Expert in advanced creative designing using Coral Draw.

  1. A bad ‘Objective/ Title’ and No ‘Summary’

Classic Example:

A hard working and enthusiastic professional looking for middle management positions

Employer thinks: You have as many as 6-10 seconds to give employer what he wants. If he is running short of time, he may move on to resumes more targeted and specific in nature.

Advice: Use strong Title/ Objective and also add Summary.

“Senior Manager – Supply chain, working with XYZ company with 10 years strong multi-faceted experience in Supply Chain Management with most reputed companies, qualified from ABC institute of Supply chain management.”

Also Add Synopsis/ Summary as it gives a quick overview of your entire profile and creates a preference.

  1. Making a long resume

Classic Example: Any resume running for more than 2 pages.

Employers think: “Who’s going to read all this?”

Advice: Keep it focused. Put only relevant information. Remember, an HR manager has to go through 100s of resumes in a day.

Ideally just 1 Page resume or maximum 2 pages.

  1. References on resume

Classic Example:

Either references are mentioned or it simply says “References: Available upon request.”

Employer thinks: Supplying references is a must. Why mention it and waste space?

Advice: No need to mention the word ‘References’ on the CV. Furnish details only when requested. Utilize space for better reasons like mentioning your strengths or special skills acquired relevant to the job.

So, now when you are making a resume, keep all these common mistakes in mind and DO NOT MAKE THEM.
